Environment & Conservation
Costa Rica is a unique country, with 6% of the world’s biodiversity in only a 0.03% of the planet’s surface.
Costa Rica counts 28 National Parks, 8 Biological Reserves and 60 Wildlife Refugees, which shelter over 13,000 species of plants.
Moreover, Costa Rica boasts over 890 varieties of birds and over 200 varieties of mammals. Throughout the country one can spot macaws, monkeys, armadillos, iguanas, dolphins and even the endangered manatee.
Furthermore, you can find over 2,000 species of butterflies and 4,500 species of moths; 163 amphibian species; 220 reptile species and 1,600 fish species (both sea and freshwater).

Costa Rica offers an exceptional variety of life zones due to its extremities in climate. We can find Savannah, tropical rain forest, tropical dry forest, cloud forest, wetland, coral reef and mangrove.
This calls for a well-based system of conserving the environment.
We are proud to say that Costa Rica has the best-developed conservation system in Latin America.
About 27% of the country is designated as protected areas and over 11% is within the National Park system. The rest of the protected land is privately owned with many of the private reserves open to the public.
Hotels also become more and more ecologically aware. So-called Eco-hotels use solar energy, water conservation and recycling, as well as food composting.
